Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, has urged the newly sworn-in Cadet Corps to move swiftly in establishing cadet units across all levels of high schools in Ghana.

His call follows recent viral videos showing students from some senior high schools engaging in acts of indiscipline, including alleged attacks on school authorities after being denied access to leaked exam answers.

Dr Apaak stressed that the presence of cadet corps in schools would instil discipline and nurture a culture of respect and responsibility among students.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the new National Cadet Board on September 12, 2025, he said, “The board of the National Cadet Corps has a lot to do if we are to reset indiscipline among the youth of Ghana. In recent times, we have witnessed acts of violence, destruction of property, and students assaulting teachers and headmasters simply because they were prevented from cheating in exams. That cannot be the type of Ghana we want to build. These cannot be the future leaders we entrust this country to. These narratives must change.”

He further urged the board to extend cadet units beyond senior high schools to junior high and even basic schools, citing disturbing reports of drug abuse among pupils at the basic level.

“Let’s see cadet corps in every school, even at the junior high school level. This is important because we are beginning to receive reports of drug abuse by pupils as young as those in basic schools. Clearly, we have a challenge, and one way to tackle it is by instilling values of accountability, integrity, service, and patriotism through a cadet system,” he said.

Dr Apaak concluded by charging the board to work closely with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to reset the moral compass of the nation through discipline in schools.

“Use the vehicle you’ve been entrusted with as a catalyst to restore discipline in our school system and among the youth. We have high expectations that the purpose of this board will be fully achieved,” he said.
