A Delta flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Chicago, Illinois after fumes were detected in the cabin on Tuesday.

Flight crew on Delta Flight 1390 from New York declared an emergency to receive priority handling from air traffic control at around 4.15pm, the airline told NBC.

All 125 passengers and five crew members deboarded the plane safely after O’Hare International Airport granted permission for a priority landing.

‘At Delta, the safety of our customers and crew comes before everything else. After fumes were detected in the cabin, our crew followed established procedures to land safely in Chicago,’ Delta told CBS News.

Earlier this week, another Delta flight that was on its way to New York City from Jacksonville, Florida made an emergency landing at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina for the same reason, WRAL reported.

‘After fumes were detected in the cabin, the crew of Delta Flight 1035 followed established procedures,’ the airline told the outlet.

All 113 passengers were evacuated safely.

According to the outlet, Delta worked with passengers to find other flights.

The aircrafts, both Airbus A220, will be taken out of service and investigated further, Delta said in a statement.

As of last month, the airline had at least three flights land prematurely due to a presence of fumes and/or smoke on board.

In August, Delta Flight 2204 took off from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport only to return to its runway 36 minutes later.

‘Delta 2204, change of plans. We now have smoke in the back, and we need to deplane immediately,’ the pilot said to air traffic control as a slight smell of jet fuel exhaust filled the cockpit.

After the passengers deboarded, maintenance crews inspected the plane, a Boeing 757, but the cause of the fumes remains under investigation.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Delta, Chicago Police, and the Chicago Department of Aviation for comment.
