C-Real speaks on AI's role in music industry C-Real speaks on AI’s role in music industry

Ghanaian rapper, record producer and media personality Cyril-Alex Gockel, known by the stage name C-Real, has pointed out how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is quietly changing the music industry, especially in areas many people tend to overlook.

Speaking during a discussion on 3Music TV, C-Real explained that while people focus on whether AI will replace musicians or top the music charts, the real change is happening behind the scenes.

According to him, AI is not trying to become a famous artiste, but instead, it’s being used to support musicians by working the algorithms to favour these musicians that use them.

“When the conversation arises about is AI taking over music, we are not thinking AI wants to run up the charts and be Billboard number one. AI can do that for an organic artist by manipulating the algorithm. It doesn’t need to get into a studio to do that,” he said.

He explained that AI is now playing a major role in areas of the music industry that are not necessarily focused on popularity or entertainment.

These include music created for movie scores, advertisements, animations, and more. In these areas, the music is not meant to become a club hit, but rather to serve a specific purpose.

“The purpose of AI doing this is that in the value chain of people who create music for whatever purpose, a lot of people don’t service us in the way Jason is describing. Those who are making songs for movies, movie scores, animations, blah, blah, blah. They’re not thinking about, will you enjoy it in the club?” C-Real explained.

He went on to say that AI is becoming a cost-effective option for creators, especially in the movie industry.

He used the example of film producers who no longer need to pay huge sums of money to creators like Hans Zimmer. Instead, they can use AI tools to create full movie scores at a much lower cost.

“So AI is using music as a component to a bigger creation. Whereas a blockbuster movie and the entire score was analysed and written and produced by AI. You won’t know because you love the movie and the more you love the movie, the more you are empowering that AI, which is making it cheaper for the movie producer because now Hans Zimmer is not going to collect your $10 million again. You pay a subscription to Google something and your movie is done in an hour,” he stated.

C-Real also pointed out that most people don’t pay attention to the music in movies. He believes that this is why AI can easily take over this part of the industry without anyone noticing.

“There’s the sections of music industry where the artist and artist performance artistry is maybe 5%. You have all the other aspects that music serves. And in those aspects, we don’t care. Even today, if I was to ask, if we open the phone line, we ask that people should give us five producers who score movies. We’ll be here till next year. People won’t get it. Because we watch the movies and we are passive about the sound we hear in the music. We don’t even care,” he added.
