Ghanaian coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has opened up on the challenging journey that led Gor Mahia FC to the 2025/26 Kenyan Premier League title.
The Kenyan giants sealed the league crown with two matches to spare after accumulating 68 points in a dominant campaign under the former Ghana coach.
Akonnor, who joined the Green-Whites just last year, guided the club to the title in his very first season in charge despite a difficult start to life at the club.
Speaking after clinching the championship, the former Black Stars head coach admitted the journey was far from easy.
The Ghanaian tactician further revealed that an opening-day defeat served as a turning point for the team early in the season.
“Well, the journey hasn’t been smooth but we managed to survive. After our unveiling the supporters told us who they are and what they are made of. They are very harsh and passionate about their team,” Akonnor told Wontumi FM/TV
“We lost our first game but that was a wake up call and won our next four games consecutively and since then we never looked back,” he added.
The ex- Black Stars coach also praised the determination of his players for overcoming several challenges throughout the campaign to secure the title before the end of the season.
“Despite difficulties we have won with two matches to spare,” he concluded.
The title triumph marks another major achievement in Akonnor’s coaching career and further strengthens his reputation on the African football scene after previously handling clubs and national teams in Ghana.
