One killed, military officer wounded in bus shooting near Denase

A fatal shooting occurred in Denase Township, Afigya Kwabre District, Ashanti Region, when two armed men attacked a bus traveling from Kumasi to Tamale. One passenger, identified as Abiola, was killed, while a military officer sustained injuries.

Authorities believe the assailants, armed with AK-47 rifles, followed the Toyota minibus from Adehyie Market before ambushing it near a Church of Pentecost building. They fired indiscriminately at the vehicle, with police suggesting a possible connection to the Bawku conflict.

The attack happened around 9 p.m. on Thursday as the bus slowed down for a speed hump. The driver ducked to avoid gunfire, but Abiola, seated behind him, was fatally struck. The injured military officer was in the front passenger seat.

Despite the attack, the driver managed to rush the victims to St. Patrick Catholic Hospital in Offinso, where Abiola was declared dead on arrival. Investigators recovered fourteen spent shells, along with the deceased’s Ghana Card and health insurance card.

Witnesses reported panic as bystanders fled the scene near the Denase lorry station. Police have intensified security and are pursuing the gunmen.
