Eddie Nketiah and Hudson-Odoi are English players of Ghanaian descent Eddie Nketiah and Hudson-Odoi are English players of Ghanaian descent

The eternal debate surrounding Ghana’s Black Stars is fueled by passion, pride, and a healthy dose of scrutiny—especially when it comes to squad selection.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers wrapped up on a high note, Ghana officially punched its ticket to the tournament.

But the real conversation now centers on reinforcements: who should join the squad to chase glory in the United States, Mexico, and Canada—and who definitely shouldn’t.

At the heart of this debate are two England-born players of Ghanaian descent: Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

EXPLAINER: Why Ghana’s World Cup qualifier against Comoros was not televised on local TV

Back in 2022, when Ghana qualified for the Qatar World Cup, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) approached both players to convince them to switch national allegiance and represent their ancestral homeland.

They declined, hoping instead for a chance to play for England’s national team—the Three Lions.

Fast forward to 2025, and after Ghana secured qualification for next year’s Mundial, renowned journalist Saddick Adams revealed that Eddie Nketiah’s family has now expressed interest in a nationality switch.

The 26-year-old Crystal Palace striker is reportedly open to representing Ghana. As for Callum Hudson-Odoi, we’ve yet to hear from his camp.

While this development may seem like good news, it raises questions of timing and fairness.

It feels opportunistic—especially considering the sacrifices made by players who helped Ghana reach the tournament. That said, the road to the World Cup is long, and injuries or dips in form are real possibilities. So, while it may be unwise to completely shut the door on any player, conditions must be clear.

No one should waltz into the squad. Selection must be earned through effort, merit, and consistent performance.

Ghana currently boasts a solid lineup of strikers: Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo, Inaki Williams, and Thomas Asante. If Nketiah is serious about joining, he must compete for his spot like everyone else.

Meanwhile, watch highlights of Ghana’s 1-0 win over Comoros in the World Cup qualifiers
