Political analyst Michael Ebo Amoah has observed that results from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary suggest Dr Bryan Acheampong has made more significant gains than Kennedy Agyapong.

Amoah noted that Agyapong’s numbers in several constituencies were not encouraging, a trend he attributes to the substantial financial resources deployed by Dr Acheampong, the former Minister of Food and Agriculture.

He further suggested that Kennedy Agyapong entered the 2026 presidential primary at a financial disadvantage, which he believes has significantly affected his performance.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s International Elections Watch programme, the analyst asserted that Dr Acheampong has now positioned himself as a major power broker within the NPP.

According to Amoah, the party’s leadership can no longer take major decisions regarding the presidential primary without Dr Acheampong’s direct involvement.

Commenting on the financial dynamics of the race, he said, “Bryan Acheampong pumped enough resources into these elections.

“Admitting the claims that he gave delegates money, if you calculate 500 Ghana cedis for about 200,000 delegates, that comes to over 100 million Ghana cedis roughly 10 million dollars. This figure does not even include the additional funds spent on campaigning and meeting delegates in their respective constituencies.”

“I believe Bryan Acheampong has become a force to be reckoned with in the NPP based on these results. When people are called to the negotiation table now, he cannot be left out.”

Meanwhile, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a former Vice President of Ghana, has once again emerged victorious in the NPP presidential primaries, securing the party’s flagbearer position for the upcoming 2028 general elections.

According to official results released by the Electoral Commission after the close of polls on January 31, 2026, Dr Bawumia garnered 110,645 votes, representing 56.48%.

His closest contender, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, obtained 46, 554 votes (23.76%).

Dr Bryan Acheampong followed with 36,303 votes (18.53%), while Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum received 1,999 votes (1.02%).

Kwabena Agyapong secured 402 votes, representing 0.21%.

In total, over 211,000 delegates cast their ballots across more than 300 polling centres nationwide in what was described as a keenly contested race to determine the party’s flagbearer for future elections.
