Afro-dancehall musician Livingstone Etse Satekla, popularly known as Stonebwoy, has made a passionate appeal for the revival of the now-defunct national airline, Ghana Airways.

In a post shared on his X page on October 6, 2025, Stonebwoy called on the relevant authorities to restore the airline, emphasising that the dream of bringing it back is still achievable despite its long collapse.

“Bring back GHANA AIRWAYS. Please and Thank You. It is Possible,” he wrote.

Ghana Airways was founded in 1958, just a year after Ghana gained independence, to serve as the country’s official national carrier.

It was formed through a joint venture between the Government of Ghana, which held 60% ownership, and the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), which owned the remaining 40%.

For decades, Ghana Airways stood as a powerful symbol of the country’s identity and progress, flying the Ghanaian flag to destinations around the world.

In 2004, serious issues came to light, including the use of unairworthy aircraft and expired licenses. As a result, the U.S. Department of Transportation banned the airline from its airspace, forcing the suspension of its New York and Baltimore routes.

In response, the Ghanaian government dismissed the airline’s board and assumed full control. However, by that time, Ghana Airways was already crippled by massive debts and operational challenges.

Efforts to revive the airline followed, including a proposal from Ethiopian Airlines to acquire a 25% stake and assist with restructuring. Unfortunately, the plan fell through, and the airline was officially liquidated in June 2005.
