The Member of Parliament of Effiduase Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, has expressed concerns over allegations made by private legal practitioner and activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, that members of the committee have been demanding money from ministerial nominees in exchange for their approval.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, he stressed the need for members of the committee to address the issue, since it has the potential to dent their image.

“A matter like this, it will be something somebody can use against you in the community, it wasn’t only for the NDC, he actually mentioned the NPP, for this industry – the perception industry, people always twist things. I think that fighting for their reputation is very important,” he noted.

He acknowledged the Minority’s position to boycott the vetting due to the bribery allegations but admitted his personal dilemma due to familial ties with Dr. Omane Boamah.

“The posture of the Chief Whip was very strong. I am conflicted because Omane Boamah is my cousin, and he wants me to be here. He is also my colleague. But as soon as my leadership team decides to boycott, I have to step aside,” he remarked.

He further explained that parliamentary procedures allow for various actions, including calls for adjournments, divisions, or boycotts, adding that such actions do not necessarily hinder the work of the committee.

“Even in our (NPP) absence, the committee can proceed. The work must continue, and I expect them to conduct their duties effectively,” he stated.

Touching on Dr. Omane Boamah’s nomination, Dr. Ayew Afriye expressed optimism, pointing out his extensive experience in the sector.

“I wish him well. He has been the ranking, interrogated the sector. He should have a firm understanding of the sector, fortunately he is at the providing end, and not the receiving. At this point in time, he should be ready for the fire. He knows the manifesto,” he added.

Parliament has, meanwhile, summoned Barker-Vormawor to appear before the Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, to provide evidence to back the claims.
