The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popular known as Chairman Wontumi has been released by Economic and Organised Crime (EOCO), Monday June 2, 2025.

This comes after he met his bail conditions.

A motion to appeal Wontumi’s GH¢50 million bail condition was formally withdrawn by his legal team on Monday, June 2.

Originally submitted on May 30, 2025, to the High Court in Accra, the motion was scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, June 3. But on Monday, June 2, it was withdrawn one day earlier.

On Wednesday, May 28, two justifiable sureties were added to his bail. The bond requirements were met by Friday, May 30, according to his legal team, which was headed by lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi.

His lawyers claimed that the ongoing application for bail review was filed without his express authorization, which is why his release was postponed even though he complied with the requirements.

On Thursday, May 29, members of the minority party demonstrated at EOCO headquarters and staged a walkout from Parliament, calling for his immediate release.

They argued that he ought to have been released on his own recognizance due to his public reputation and little risk of escape.

As part of their protest, NPP supporters also shut down traffic and blocked the road in front of EOCO’s offices.

Now that the motion has been withdrawn and all bail requirements have been met, EOCO has freed Chairman Wontumi.
