Netherland forward of Ghanaian descent, Memphis Depay has revealed why he made the switch to Serie A Betano in Brazil, stating that Brazilians share cultural similarities with Ghanaians.

The former Manchester United forward, after two seasons with Spanish giants Atletico Madrid, moved to Brazil in September 2024 as a free agent. The 30-year-old signed for Corinthians on a deal that runs until December 2026.

Depay’s move surprised many football fans, as he left Atletico Madrid just as he appeared to be finding his form, having played 28 matches in La Liga in the 2023/24 season.

However, in an interview with Flashscore, Depay explained that the cultural similarities between Brazil and Ghana influenced his decision to join the 2017 Serie A Betano champions.

“The people in Brazil are like Ghanaians—very enthusiastic, energized people. The country is beautiful, and they have good food. The training facility is amazing,” Depay said.

“I just knew that Brazil is like the Mecca of football. All the talents are coming from there, so I wanted to see that, and they convinced me,” he added.

Depay also dismissed the idea of retiring anytime soon, asserting that he still has much to offer in football.

“I’m 30. What are you talking about retiring? It’s a long way off. I’m young. I’ve been in the game a long time, but I have a long time left, God willing,” he said.

Depay had an impressive debut season with Corinthians, scoring seven goals and providing one assist in 11 matches as the team secured a spot in the Copa Libertadores qualifiers.
