The stylish boxer Orlando Mosquera “El Virus” (16-5-1, 3 KOs), 28, had a great showing last Saturday, September 5th, after securing a surprising unanimous decision victory over the undefeated prospect Jonathan Miniel (9-1, 8 KOs), 29, in a 10-round bout for the vacant national welterweight championship. The event was held with government support at the Atheyna Bylon Training Center.
Mosquera was returning to the ring after his last fight in December, bringing with him the experience of having fought in Guatemala, Abu Dhabi, and Argentina.
From the opening bell, Mosquera dominated the fight with his excellent boxing skills, landing frequent and precise punches on Miniel, who was often overwhelmed by Mosquera’s speed.
Between the fourth and fifth rounds, Mosquera began landing more consistently and demonstrating his control of the fight.
In the sixth round, Mosquera landed a powerful punch that sent Miniel to the canvas. Miniel appeared almost lost in the ring, but the experienced international referee Hector Afu ruled that there was no knockdown. After the fight resumed, Miniel landed several low blows on Mosquera, for which the referee deducted a point.
Miniel remained in the fight, trying to keep the action in the center of the ring and engage in exchanges, but Mosquera managed to stay in the fight and finish strong.
Mosquera secured a unanimous decision victory with scores of 96-93, 96-93, and 97-92, becoming the new national welterweight champion.
