This main event more than lived up to its hype and made up for many of the undercard matches.
In the third a left hook from Cruz caught Roach and sent him reeling back, his right glove touching the canvas, counting for a knockdown, the first ever suffered by Roach.
Roach started to find his groove in the sixth round, his best up to that point. Cruz was deducted a point for using his head and pushing down the head of Roach. Cruz was being walked into beautiful counters by Roach as well.
Roach had even more success in the ninth and it showed in his own confident gestures whenever he landed. Roach spent the round walking Cruz down, something very few expected to see, A hard left staggered Cruz backwards to end the round.
Roach continued to walk Cruz into punches as Cruz’ corner implored him to start moving forward again.
The championship rounds of 11 and 12 were close. It appeared Roach landed more, but it was a pro-Cruz crowd. Perhaps fittingly, or even predictably, the fight ended in a majority draw 115-111 for Cruz And 113-113. Cruz Retains his WBC interim super lightweight title.
