Botswana’s star athlete, Letsile Tebogo, has disclosed that he received citizenship offers from three countries following his impressive performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The athlete emerged as the breakout star of the Games with a historic win in the 200m final, defeating United States sprinter Noah Lyles and stunning the global audience.

Prior to that, Tebogo became the first athlete from Botswana to win gold in the 100m and also secure silver in the 200m at the 2021 World U‑20 Championships.

In an interview with Duma FM, Tebogo revealed that after his outstanding performances, he received citizenship offers from Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Tunisia in order to compete for them in international competitions.

“I’ve got three offers on the table , Qatar, Abu Dhabi (UAE), and Tunisia. Those are the three that are there. We are still trying to see a way forward with the guys because we told them what we want, and they are promising to improve their offer. So yes, that’s how it is. You consider it if it’s something concrete, like a yearly package of what they can give you,” he said.

However, he clarified that he did not give serious attention to the offers: “The offers came, but they were all rejected. I think the only serious ones were from Dubai and Qatar, but you have to consider that you’d be out of the sport for about four years without representing any country before you can switch. So for now, there’s no offer on the table,” he added.

Tebogo played a key role in Botswana’s 4x100m relay team that beat the United States to win gold at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
