Former Ghana international Rashid Sumaila is confident the Black Stars will overcome their challenges with the right approach.

Ghana, who are four-time champions of the AFCON, succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Sudan at the Benina Martyrs Stadium in Libya last Tuesday, October 15, 2024.

The result leaves the Black Stars on the verge of failing to qualify for CAF’s biggest tournament for the first time since 2004.

In an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM, the former Kotoko defender expressed deep concerns about the team’s recent struggles and has therefore called on the leadership of Ghana football to fix the problems at hand rather than apportion blame.

“We’ve lost whether we like it or not, so I think it will be prudent for us to put it behind us and find solutions to our problems,” he said.

Sumaila went on to express his utmost belief in the Black Stars‘ resurgence and said, “We will continue to struggle if we keep apportioning blame rather than finding solutions. The leadership must sit down and assess themselves, fix the problems, give the team time, and I believe things will get better.”

The Black Stars will return to action in November 2024 to face Angola and Niger in their final Group F games.

Ghana now needs to secure wins against already-qualified Angola and Niger, while hoping that Sudan falters against these same opponents, to keep their chances alive for next year’s tournament in Morocco.
