Amid the recent online clash between Ghanaians and Zambians over the cultural significance of the Fugu, it’s worth looking back at a moment when the Black Stars proudly showcased the traditional Northern Ghanaian smock on the world stage.

At the 2022 World Cup, the Ghanaian national team arrived draped in Fugu, also known as Batakari, a garment that represents strength, courage, and leadership.

The outfit, traditionally worn during durbars, chief installations, and other solemn occasions, immediately drew global attention for its elegance and symbolism.

The throwback is particularly relevant following the recent debate sparked by some Zambians criticizing President John Dramani Mahama for wearing the same traditional attire during an official visit to Zambia on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

Ghanaians have come to the defense of the president, explaining that the Fugu is a respected national garment and that the president intentionally wore it to promote locally made clothing internationally.

Celebrities, including sports media personality Sadick Adams and YouTuber Wode Maya, have also defended the president and the cultural significance of Fugu, condemning the dismissive remarks from Zambian netizens.
