The Black Stars have paid tribute to legendary coach and player, Charles Kumi (CK) Gyamfi, marking the 10th anniversary of his passing.

They noted that his achievement of winning three African Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles will forever be remembered as one of Ghana’s biggest sporting achievements.

“Today, we honor the memory of our legendary player and coach, Charles Kumi Gyamfi. Under his leadership, the #BlackStars lifted three AFCON titles (1963, 1965 & 1982). His legacy continues to inspire,” the official Black Stars X account wrote.

    About CK Gyamfi

CK Gyamfi passed away on September 2, 2015, at the age of 86 at the Cocoa Clinic in Accra.

Gyamfi was remarkable for being the first African player to play in Germany, joining Fortuna Düsseldorf in 1960.

He won three Africa Cup of Nations trophies, making him one of the most successful coaches in the continental tournament, alongside former Egypt manager Hassan Shehata.

Gyamfi played for both Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko and was enstooled as a chief by the people of Okorasi in Ghana’s Eastern region in 1999.

5th Anniversary: Ghanaians pay tribute to legendary coach CK Gyamfi

His influence on Ghanaian football is immense, starting with his involvement in the Gold Coast XI team that toured Great Britain in 1951, where he scored 11 of Ghana’s goals despite the team losing eight of their 10 matches.

CK Gyamfi successfully transitioned from an exceptional player to an exceptional coach. He also formed his own club, Great Ashanti, in 1954 and was a founding member of the Black Star.
