Renowned Ghanaian coach Isaac Adade Opeele Boateng has defended the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, due to the dwindling fortunes of football in the country.
According to him, the GFA president, who has been in office for five years, cannot be entirely blamed for the poor performances of the various national teams, especially the Black Stars.
The former Kotoko coach argued that the country had failed to win the coveted African Cup of Nations trophy in 42 years, implying the problems existed before Kurt took charge of the GFA in October 2019.
Coach Opeele cited the example of how Nigeria did not qualify for the AFCON on several occasions but came back to win it in 2013.
He called for proper measures to be put in place to salvage football in Ghana rather than blaming officials.
“Nigeria did not qualify for AFCON 2012, BUT came back stronger to win AFCON 2013. Nigeria did not qualify for AFCON 2015 & 2017. Y’all behaving like Kurt killed world football, forgetting Ghana has failed to win a trophy in 42 years. We need to restrategise to come back stronger!” he wrote on X.
The comments come amidst growing frustrations over the Black Stars‘ poor performance.
The national football team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Angola on Friday, November 15.
Ghana now finds itself at the bottom of Group F, with just 3 points from 5 matches, including two losses and three draws.
This marks the first time in 21 years that the Black Stars have failed to qualify for the prestigious tournament.
