Ghanaian goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi played an important role as FC St. Gallen lifted the Swiss Cup after a convincing 3-0 victory over FC Stade Lausanne Ouchy in the final at the Kybunpark on Sunday, May 24.

The stalwart goalkeeper was not initially named in the starting line-up but was called into action just before halftime after reserve goalkeeper Lukas Watkowiak received a red card.

Watkowiak had been St. Gallen’s first-choice goalkeeper throughout the club’s Swiss Cup campaign this season, but his dismissal forced Ati-Zigi into the game earlier than expected.

The Black Stars shot-stopper delivered a composed performance after coming on and successfully kept a clean sheet during his 46 minutes on the pitch as St. Gallen comfortably secured the trophy.

Ati-Zigi showed calmness and experience in goal to help his side maintain control of the final despite being reduced to ten men before the break.

The cup triumph adds another major achievement to the 29-year-old goalkeeper’s career ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup with the Black Stars.

Ati-Zigi is expected to be part of Ghana’s squad for the Mundial as the Black Stars prepare to face Panama, England and Croatia in Group L.
