Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, are at risk of having their international friendly matches against Senegal and Tunisia canceled due to the inability of the sporting authorities to raise $40,000.

A report by Joy News indicates that neither the Ministry of Youth and Sports nor the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is able to raise the amount needed to fund the expenses the team will incur for the games.

The two matches, which are scheduled to take place in November 2024, were intended to prepare the team and assess their performance ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

However, the report indicates that due to the prevailing circumstances, it is highly unlikely that the games will come off.

The Black Queens have not played a game since their friendly match against Japan in July 2024, where the team suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat.

Head coach Nora Hauptle was hoping to use the two friendly games to examine her team’s readiness for the tournament, which is now in limbo.

Ghana were placed in Group C, which consists of former champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania, in what many have tagged as a group of death.

The 2024 WAFCON will be hosted in Morocco from July 5 to July 6, 2025.
