The Black Queens of Ghana face an extended wait for their return to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Thursday rescheduled the tournament.
The tournament, originally scheduled from March 17 to April 3, will now run from July 25 to August 16, 2026.
CAF said in a statement that the competition, awarded to Morocco in October 2024, had to be rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances following consultations with partners.
“After discussions between CAF and its partners, FIFA and other stakeholders, CAF decided to reschedule the dates of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026, to 25 July – 16 August 2026; to ensure the success of this important women’s competition in light of certain unforeseen circumstances. Preparations for the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 are underway, and all the parties are confident that it will be very successful,” the statement said.
The date shift means national teams, including Ghana, will need to revise training plans and logistics ahead of the tournament.
The Black Queens have been in the UAE preparing for the tournament but would now have to wait as they look to improve on their bronze medal finish at last year’s edition.
