The world’s most famous philanthropist has an uncomfortable secret: Bill Gates is making money off Trump’s deportation machine through his stake in a major flight contractor.

This makes him a sort of ‘surprise beneficiary’ of President Donald Trump‘s expansive deportation efforts, according to the Huffington Post’s reporting.

Gates’ company is called ‘Signature Aviation’ – on their website, they refer to their service as ‘the world’s largest network of private aviation terminals.’

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) relies on private charter airlines to move detainees as part of its flight network known as ‘ICE Air,’ overseen by ICE Air Operations under the Department of Homeland Security.

Signature reportedly handles everything from fueling planes and supplying ground crews to providing boarding equipment and hangar space at hundreds of airports—primarily across the United States.

According to the Huffington Post’s extensive reporting, experts like plane trackers and immigration activists say Gates’ financial involvement in Signature is a conflict of interest — marking a stark contrast with his humanitarian achievements and progress, including the Gates Foundation’s backing of several immigration–centered nonprofit organizations.

At a Seattle airport, Signature seemed to distance itself from immigration flights last month by covering its logos on the boarding stairs with cardboard.

The move came at a location where local officials had installed cameras in 2023 to monitor ICE flight activity.

According to their reporting, an activist who tracks aircraft movements on Bluesky — a social media platform competing with X — documented how these planes crisscross the country, shuttling ICE detainees between facilities and, ultimately, to deportation flights.

As the Huffington Post’s investigation revealed, these sightings have become routine across the U.S.— but they’ve been happening for over a decade.

Private aviation contractors have long managed tens of thousands of ICE Air flights during that time.

Back In February, the White House posted a video of a Signature plane, with the caption ‘ASMR: Illegal Alien Deportation Flight,’ showing migrants being handcuffed and transported.

Aviation companies say Trump’s mass deportations wouldn’t take off without private airline companies like Signature.

With fresh funding from Congress and renewed momentum from the White House, the number of deportation flights is rapidly increasing.

These flights are used to move immigration detainees around the U.S. and to forcibly return them to their countries of origin –– or, in some instances, to unfamiliar destinations they have no choice over.

According to a 2019 report from the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general, ICE Air transported or deported 181,317 individuals via charter flights in fiscal year 2017, while only 8,288 were flown out on commercial airlines.

Signature Aviation’s global head of corporate affairs sent a statement in response to this story, saying, ‘Our FBOs (Fixed–Base Operators) must accept flight operations that comply with the law, FAA regulations and contract requirements at federally funded airports,’ Rosanna Fiske told the Huffington Post.

The Gates Foundation has reportedly not commented on its involvement in these deportation flights.
