Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Joe Tagoe has praised goalkeeper Benjamin Asare for his remarkable transformation, describing him as a confident and commanding presence between the posts.

Once battling relegation with Great Olympics just a season ago, Asare has quickly risen to become Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper.

His back-to-back clean sheets against Chad and Madagascar in March not only stunned fans but also secured the trust of national coach Otto Addo, who confirmed him as the Black Stars’ new number one.

Tagoe, speaking to Happy FM, highlighted Asare’s maturity and leadership qualities as key to his recent success.

“The way his confidence has reached now, everyone will testify that he is very superb. Sometimes I tell a lot of people that, as a goalkeeper, it is not a show like diving here and there. You can see that from the way he communicates. The way he talks to defenders, the way he organises them, seriously, if you look at that aspect, it is very commendable,” he said.

At 33, the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper is enjoying arguably the best spell of his career. His club form mirrors his national rise, he has kept 15 clean sheets in 24 matches, ranking third in the Ghana Premier League for shutouts this season.

His performances have earned plaudits and recognition beyond the pitch. Businessman Alhaji Seidu Adongo recently rewarded Asare with a brand-new car, a gesture seen as both encouragement and a symbol of belief in local talent.
