Legendary Ghanaian goalkeeper, Sammy Adjei has said that it is imperative for Accra Hearts of Oak’s goalie, Benjamin Asare, to join the Black Stars for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to him, the Phobia goalkeeper has been instrumental in the team’s qualification for the Mundial, with his goalkeeping exploits rescuing them on several occasions.

Adjei, the goalkeeper who led Hearts of Oak to a historic treble in the 2000s, noted that it is incumbent on the Black Stars’ technical team to include Asare in the World Cup squad, considering his performances and commitment.

Speaking in an interview with Angel TV, Sammy Adjei advised Asare to work hard to recover from his injury, stressing that his absence would be a big blow for the team at the tournament.

“It is difficult to comment on this issue. Asare must go [to the World Cup]. Even if he is not the first-choice goalkeeper, he can be on the bench. Goalkeepers are different in football.

“I pray for God to grant him strength to recover in time and perform. Goalies train to regain their form, while others use different strategies, but it is tough. I wish him a speedy recovery because we don’t have other reliable goalkeepers, and he came to save us. If he stays out, it will destroy everything,” he said in Twi.

Asare has been sidelined for two weeks due to injury and has missed almost four Hearts of Oak matches.
