A child has died after being hit by a truck on one of the last days of school holidays.

The child, believed to about 12-years-old, was hit by the truck on High Street in Bendigo, 150km north-west of Melbourne, about 8.30am on Friday.

A witness desperately tried to resuscitate the child, who died at the scene.

The truck driver is assisting police with their investigation.

Senior Sergeant Ian Brooks said the scene was ‘hugely distressing’.

He said police would be assisted by the Major Collisions Investigations Unit as officers determine the exact circumstances of the crash.

High Street has been closed from Vine Street to Lily Street.

Drivers are being asked to find alternate routes through Bendigo’s CBD.

Anyone with information or CCTV footage has been urged to contact police.
