A well-known media personality, poet, and governance commentator from Ghana has disclosed how Accra Academy demanded GH¢5,000 in bribes from his father before granting him admission to Science, his then-dream program. However, Accra Academy provided him Visual Arts instead of the General Science program he desired; therefore, a school employee gave them that corruptible option so he could read his preferred program. Hughes was sent to Holy Trinity Cathedral Senior High School (HOTCASS) when his father, who was the Director of Projects Development and Industry at the Ghana Prisons Service at the time, turned down the offer. Without asking for money or offering bribes, HOTCASS immediately offered Hughes a science course.
Despite his intense desire to enroll in that program at Accra Academy, his ideal school, HOTCASS provided him with additional room to develop and discover his leadership abilities as a young man. Hughes was elected as a Compound Prefect and Vice-President of the Students Representative Council after being appointed an SRC representative as early as SHS 1.At the time, he also recognized the importance of public speaking, which is the professional word for the ability to talk clearly and persuasively in front of an audience. After joining his school’s debate team, Johnnie was one of the main contributors to the team’s victory in the National Debating Award. In addition, he received a certificate from the British High Commissioner and was chosen to compete in the Gold Jubilee Olympic Baton Relay.
He held the position of President of the Ghana Olympic Committee at the time. Following his time at HOTCASS, Hughes pursued a more in-depth interest in journalism at the Ghana Institute of Journalism. At the Institute of Commercial Management in the United Kingdom, he also obtained certifications in journalism, media studies, and communications (including public relations, advertising, and marketing). At the British Council’s Master-Class for Producers and Presenters (Radio and Television), Johnnie was also named the overall best student. He has had an incredible career in the media and entertainment sector.
In 2008, he won the title of top performer for nine weeks in a row on TV3’s Live Band Show. He has previously won Kiddafest’s Best Poetry Act award. Johnnie Hughes has demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is a skilled poet and vocalist in addition to being a journalist. He won the title of Pentasi ‘B’ Universal Inspirational Poet in 2016.
At the moment, he co-hosts the Newday Show on Media General (TV3). He had previously hosted “Viasat 1’s Good Life Game Show” and “Daybreak Africa Show” on TV Africa.
