Bayern Munich are taking a major ‘risk’ giving Ballon d’Or winner Harry Kane a bumper new deal, according to former midfielder Didi Hamann.
Kane, 33, and Bayern Munich have agreed on a two-year contract extension worth £400,000 per week which will make him the world’s highest-paid English sportsman.
But ex-Liverpool and Bayern man Hamann has suggested that this may prove to be a poor move given Kane’s age and possible decline.
‘Whether he’ll still be scoring goals in the coming years, we’ll see. He’s 33 years old and will be 36 when the contract expires. There’s obviously a certain risk involved,’ Champions League winner Hamann told Sky Germany.
Hamann then went on to justify his bizarre comments by saying: ‘He didn’t play well for England at the European Championship two years ago, and he had problems in the last two knockout matches at the World Cup.’
The ex-Germany international also suggested that staying at Bayern was the best deal Kane was going to get at this stage in his career, saying: ‘I don’t think there were any major suitors from England.
Harry Kane has signed a two-year-long contract extension with Bayern but Didi Hamann is not convinced this is the right move for the Bavarians
Speaking with Sky Germany Dietmar Hamann expressed concerns over his old side offering Kane such a large deal
‘They would have taken him for 20 or 30 million, but Bayern would probably have wanted at least half or three-quarters back this summer of the 100 million euros they had to pay Tottenham for Kane in 2023.
‘I don’t think anyone would have paid that. That’s why the contract extension is something they probably couldn’t have done any differently.’
Hamann is arguably taking a harsh view on Kane’s new deal considering how the Englishman has performed since arriving in Germany.
In three seasons at the Allianz he has 102 Bundesliga goals in as many games as well as 28 assists, winning the Bundesliga Golden Boot every year since his arrival.
The Englishman’s goals have fired Bayern to two back-to-back Bundesliga titles and a DFB-Pokal triumph.
But clearly all of this is not enough for Hamann who has previously critiqued Kane’s performances in Germany saying that last season his role in Kompany’s Bayern side was ‘unacceptable.’
In his Sky Germany column the former defensive midfielder wrote: ‘I don’t know if Kompany is happy that Harry Kane is no longer playing exclusively as a striker.
‘It’s not acceptable to me that Kane is winning balls in his own penalty area, because that’s not his job at all.’
