The president-elect John Dramani Mahama has praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, his principal rival, for admitting loss in the recently concluded general elections, calling it a move that reduced tensions across the country.

Mr. Mahama praised the importance of Bawumia’s concession in promoting peace during a pivotal period for the nation in his victory address at his campaign office on December 9, 2024, just after the Electoral Commission proclaimed him the election winner.

“I will like to thank the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his statesmanship in conceding the election long before the declaration of the results by the Electoral Commission. This concession largely defused the tensions that are characteristics of high-stakes elections such as this,” Mahama stated.

The former president, who won 56.55% of the vote and is returning to govern Ghana, emphasized the value of cooperation and solidarity in the coming days.

Dr. Bawumia, who secured 41.61% of the vote, had earlier conceded defeat on Sunday morning calling for national unity and congratulating Mahama on his victory.

His action was was applauded by a large number of the citizenry as a demonstration of political maturity and a commitment to Ghana’s democratic values.

The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, declared Mr Mahama the winner, with a total of 6,328,397 votes. Dr. Bawumia received 4,657,304 votes.
