Former Minister of Tourism, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has acknowledged that all five aspirants in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential race have the capacity to lead the party, but insists that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia clearly stands above the rest.

Speaking on Metro TV on Thursday, January 22, Mercer said the contest should not be framed as a question of competence alone, but of who best positions the party for victory in 2028.

“All five aspirants are qualified, but Bawumia stands tall when you look at experience, national appeal and readiness to lead,” he stated.

He explained that Dr Bawumia’s exposure as Vice President of Ghana and flagbearer in the 2024 Election gives him a strategic advantage over his competitors.

According to Mercer, this is why a growing number of senior party figures and former parliamentary candidates have lined up their supports behind Dr Bawumia’s bid to once again lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.

Egyapa Mercer further said feedback from party structures across the country point to overwhelming grassroots support for the former Vice President.

“From what we are seeing on the ground, Dr Bawumia is likely to win with close to 70 per cent of the votes. The support base is very strong,” he added.

Mercer, who is leading over 100 former NPP parliamentary candidates from the 2024 Election in backing Dr Bawumia, attributed the momentum to the former vice president’s accessibility and track record in office.

He added that such a commanding victory would position the party strongly ahead of the 2028 general elections by providing unity and clarity of leadership early in the political cycle.
