Former Vice President of Ghana and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly condemned the violent incidents reported during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

Speaking in an interview on July 11, 2025, Dr Bawumia described the development as a betrayal of the democratic principles the National Democratic Congress (NDC) pledged to uphold upon assuming power in the 2024 general elections.

“The violence we are witnessing is deeply disappointing. It undermines the very foundation of our democracy and raises questions about the NDC’s commitment to peace and due process,” he stated.

The Electoral Commission ordered a rerun in 19 polling stations within the constituency after disputes arose over unauthenticated results from the December 7, 2024, elections.

However, tensions escalated during the rerun, with reports of voter intimidation, violent clashes, and arrests involving individuals in unapproved uniforms.

Dr Bawumia called on the relevant authorities to ensure a swift and impartial investigation, urging the public to remain calm while the electoral process is concluded peacefully.
