Residents and traders of Barekese in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region have staged a massive demonstration against the District Chief Executive (DCE) over plans to site a proposed 24-Hour Economy market at Asuofua instead of Barekase, the district capital.

The demonstrators argue that Barekese has suitable land for the project and is the best location to boost economic activities.

Speaking to the media on Monday January 19,2026, the leader of the demonstration, Dickson Amankwa, said the protest was jointly organised by traders and NDC members to demand development for Barekase.

“We cannot allow our DCE to take development of Barekase for granted,” he stated, calling on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene.

Amankwa noted that Barekese has been underserved, with major projects sited at Nkawie.

The demonstrators presented a petition to the DCE, received by District Coordinating Director Solomon Kwaku Adjei, who assured them their concerns would be addressed.

The protest saw residents, traders, and NDC members marching through Barekese streets to register their displeasure over the proposed relocation.

The protestors presented a petition to the District Assembly calling on them ro rescind their decision

The Coordinating Director for the Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly, Solomon Kwaku Agyei after receiving the petition pledged to forward it to the DCE.

He assured that the matter will be addressed with stakeholders involved to avoid further protests.
