The National Democratic Congress finds itself navigating a slippery path regarding discussions on succession from President John Dramani Mahama. Given that the President won’t be contesting in 2028. Several names have emerged as potential flag-bearers for the NDC in 2028:

    • Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah: The National Chairman of the NDC with decades of political experience and grassroots appeal.

    • Mr. Julius Debrah: Chief of Staff to President Mahama, considered a strategic and unifying choice with significant governance experience.

•Hon. Lawyer Haruna Iddrisu: Minister for Education, respected for parliamentary experience and policy acumen.

•Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson: Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, a Member of Parliament, widely respected in the Central Region and across Ghana for his dedication to the service and a strong advocate of good governance, transparency and accountability.

•Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa: Minister for Foreign Affairs, Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency in the Volta region from 2013 to date with an admiring youth appeal.

It is quite apparent that the NPP has strategically set out to create tension around the topic of a potential successor to the Mahama-led government. Gradually, the NDC seems to be falling into the NPP’s calculated strategy, which aims to divert attention from government business by fueling petty internal politicking within the party.

Based on all indications, the achievements of President Mahama during his tenure will be the pivotal factors that Ghanaians will consider when assessing and deciding whether to renew the NDC’s mandate with any prospective successor. There is no shred of doubt that whoever emerges victorious as the NDC’s next flagbearer will hinge their campaign significantly on the achievements and legacy of President Mahama. Therefore, it is extremely imperative for the NDC to handle the next presidential primaries with utmost care and meticulous management to avoid distracting government business, as this will constitute the party’s goodwill heading into the 2028 General Election.

It is well understood that the party is poised to experience its first rigorous presidential primaries since its formation out of the PNDC in 1992, ahead of the 1992 General Election, accordingly, the breeding tension suggests anticipatory.

Consequences of Early Discussions Without Remedy:

If early discussions about succession aren’t managed carefully, several consequences could unfold:

    – Distraction from Government Business: The NDC risks being distracted from governing due to internal politicking fueled by succession discussions.

    – Tension and Potential Divisions: The NPP’s strategy to create tension around a potential successor could lead to divisions within the NDC.

    – Impact on Legacy and Mandate Renewal: President Mahama’s undertakings during his tenure could stall and potentially lead to a perceived failed legacy, which would be pivotal in Ghanaians assessing and renewing the NDC’s mandate with any prospective successor.

I therefore urge the leadership of the NDC to implement urgent corrective measures to proactively address this issue head-on, ensuring the party’s focus remains on governance and unity. I further admonish all party faithfuls of the NDC to stay vigilant and resolute against the NPP’s rehearsed strategy of fostering division to capture power in 2028.

    Shalom, ends!
