Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has renewed calls for the Ghana Audit Service to be completely separated from the Executive arm of government, arguing that only full autonomy will enable the institution to deliver its mandate effectively.

He made the remarks when the Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, led a delegation from the Service’s board to pay a courtesy call on him.

The visit, according to a metrotvonline report dated November 15, 2025, highlighted ongoing concerns about the Service’s operational constraints.

Bagbin described the Audit Service’s heavy reliance on donor funding as ‘unsustainable’, warning that such dependence undermines national accountability structures.

He noted that budget proposals submitted by the Service are frequently cut by the Executive, particularly in compensation and staffing allocations, leaving the institution under-resourced.

The Speaker argued that although the Audit Service plays a critical role in ensuring good governance, its importance is not adequately recognised.

“A donor community cannot breastfeed you and be able to do good work for the country,” he cautioned.

He further suggested that constitutional amendments may be necessary to grant the Service full independence and guaranteed resources, stressing that such reforms would fortify its oversight functions and strengthen efforts to protect public funds.
