The Public Relations Officer of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Patience Mensah, has disclosed that the pitch at the Baba Yara Stadium will be ready for the much-anticipated Super Clash between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak.
This statement comes after concerns were raised following Asante Kotoko’s FA Cup round-of-64 game against Future Stars. During the match, Asante Kotoko’s Ashanti Regional Circles Chairman, Alex Manu, notably declared that the pitch was not in ideal condition.
However, in an interview with Max FM, the Public Relations Officer of the NSA expressed confidence that the ongoing works at the stadium had significantly improved the pitch. She also acknowledged the impact of the recently held Milo Games on its condition.
“After the renovations, the Milo Games were held, so we engaged officials and fans. Those who watched the games on the first day can attest that the pitch was in very good condition. However, because it is natural grass, defects occur with continuous use.
“We prepared a maintenance plan, and after the games ended, we started working to restore the pitch to ensure it will be ready for Sunday, so Kotoko can host the match here,” she said.
Regarding fans’ concerns about the frequent usage of the pitch just days after the renovations, Mensah explained that the NSA wanted to ensure students had the chance to showcase their potential, which could benefit Ghana in the long term.
“The Milo Games align with the NSA’s core mandate to promote sports. Unfortunately, their calendar coincided with the completion of the renovations. That’s why we created a maintenance plan to address the wear and tear caused by the games. Additionally, the games provided an opportunity for students to be scouted, which ultimately benefits the country,” she added.
Asante Kotoko, with 18 points, and Hearts of Oak, with 19 points, are seventh and sixth, respectively, in the Ghana Premier League. On Sunday, December 15, 2024, both teams will have a chance to claim all three points in their quest to reclaim the title.
