The Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Seth Panwum, has stated that the rehabilitation works at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium have progressed very well to meet the required standards.

He noted that the grass on the pitch is now up to standard and would not pose any challenge to the players during football matches, as some had complained earlier.

Panwum indicated that NSA officials would undertake an assessment of the pitch and the entire stadium to give the green light for the stadium to be used to host football matches.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One Sports, the NSA board chair said that if the checks are successful, Kumasi-based club Asante Kotoko could use the venue for their home matches in the Ghana Premier League.

“Baba Yara is equally undergoing, let me say, re-turfing, and it has come of age. The grass is up to standard now.

“With constant work after the game, we would go to Baba Yara as well to review the work so far so that we can attest whether it is ready, then we can allow Kumasi Asante Kotoko to return to the pitch,” he said.

The Baba Yara Stadium was banned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) from hosting Black Stars matches due to the poor state of the pitch and the facilities.

This led to prompt action by the NSA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, to undertake renovation works to improve the stadium’s facilities.
