In a major boost for Ghana’s mining sector and the Upper West Region, Azumah Resources Ghana Limited has signed a landmark $37.5 million agreement with Danish engineering giant FLSmidth to supply cutting-edge mining equipment for the development of the Black Volta and Sankofa gold concessions.

The signing ceremony took place at the Marriott Hotel in Accra, marking a decisive step toward full operations within the next 21 months.

The partnership sets the stage for a new phase of environmentally responsible gold exploration, with Azumah Resources assuring the public that sustainability lies at the heart of its operations.

Addressing concerns about galamsey, environmental degradation, and unemployment in mining communities, Noel Addo, Director of Azumah Resources Ghana Limited, emphasised the company’s commitment to a green transition.

“Everything done at the mine is with green transition in mind. Over 1,700 jobs will be created across the value chain for community members,” he stated.

Addo also highlighted the significant financial support the company received from businessman Ibrahim Mahama, the only external shareholder of Azumah Resources. He revealed that Mahama has invested $500,000 every month since October 2023 to revive and stabilise the company.

However, he dispelled circulating rumours that the investment was a bid to take over the mine due to his relationship with former President John Dramani Mahama.

“These claims are completely untrue,” Addo stressed. “Mr. Mahama’s support has been instrumental, but it does not amount to acquiring the mine.”

On the technology front, Alistair Mackay, FLSmidth’s Vice President for Capital Sales in Europe, Arabia, and Africa, said the company is committed to deploying world-class equipment that will enhance operational efficiency and output.

“The signing today is really around the long-lease items, so there’s going to be a lot of equipment. We expect to install the detailed components early next year, and anticipate that six months from now, we will see construction,” Mackay explained.

The Azumah–FLSmidth partnership is expected to not only unlock the mineral potential of the Upper West but also promote responsible mining practices and serve as a catalyst for local economic transformation.
