A rising cricket star who was hit in the head by a ball during a pre-match warm-up is fighting for his life in a Melbourne hospital.

The teenage boy, 17, was training in the nets for a T20 match between Ferntree Gully and Eildon Park at Wally Tew Reserve on Tuesday afternoon when tragedy struck.

It is believed the boy was hit in the head and neck area by a ball and suffered a serious head injury despite wearing a helmet at the time.

Emergency services were called to the oval about 4.45pm.

Specialist paramedics worked frantically to stabilise the critically-injured teen at the scene before he was rushed to Monash Medical Centre under lights and sirens.

    He remains in critical condition.

‘Someone ran and grabbed a defib and an ambulance was there within maybe five or six minutes,’ a shocked witness told the Herald Sun.

‘Then there was fire brigade and police flying in left, right and centre.’

The T20 match was abandoned shortly after the distressing incident.

In addition to being a promising young cricketer, the 17-year-old is understood to also be an accomplished footballer.
