At least five people have been killed and several more were injured in an attack on a school in the Austrian city of Graz today.

Police said a major operation is currently underway in a street called Dreierschuetzengasse, on which there is a secondary school, while members of the public have been urged to avoid the area.

According to Austrian news outlet Krone, gunshots were heard inside the school this morning, before police descended on the scene at around 10am local time.

The perpetrator was gunned down by police, local media reports, but Austrian authorities are yet to confirm this.

This is a breaking story, more to follow.
