Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham: Emerson Palmieri earns Hammers a deserved point with second-half equaliser after Jacob Ramsey’s early strike

The next eight days are likely to determine what will happen to Aston Villa and West Ham over the remaining four months of the season.

Villa’s chase for a centre-back became even more urgent when Tyrone Mings, who had started the match as one of only two fit central defenders, suffered what looked a worrying knee injury during the first half.

And West Ham’s hunt for a forward will surely intensify. Had Graham Potter’s team possessed a sharp, confident centre-forward, they would have taken three points from a hugely encouraging performance.

Villa transfer chief Monchi will be busy until the transfer window closes on February 3 and so will West Ham chairman David Sullivan, as the club are finalising the departure of technical director Tim Steidten.

Goals in either half from Jacob Ramsey and Emerson meant the points were shared as referee Peter Bankes lost control in the first half and struggled to regain it. Lucas Paqueta escaped punishment for his pathetic attempt to have Lucas Digne sent off just before half-time and there were various fractious episodes that Bankes simply did not handle well enough.

The result also means Villa have failed to win any of their last six league fixtures that have followed a Champions League game – a record they must improve to have a chance of returning to the competition next season.

West Ham boss Graham Potter swapped his goalkeepers, bringing in Alphonse Areola for Lukasz Fabianski, and fielded four full-backs, with Vladimir Coufal in the back three instead of the suspended Konstantinos Mavropanos.

The visitors were incredibly dozy in the opening 10 minutes. Only a fine tackle from Max Kilman had stopped Ramsey bursting through and it was no surprise when Ramsey gave Villa an eighth-minute lead.

The midfielder swapped passes with Ollie Watkins, making his 200th appearance, for Villa, drove into the box and found the bottom corner. It was Watkins’ 100th goal involvement of a fine spell at Villa Park.

With suspended boss Unai Emery watching from the posh seats, Villa were rampant. Morgan Rogers had the ball in the net only for Watkins to be ruled offside, either side of chances for Boubacar Kamara and Leon Bailey. No wonder West Ham fans chanted ‘We’ve got the ball’ when Mohammed Kudus finally created a moment of danger.

Though West Ham were improving, Villa kept them at arm’s length. Just before the half-hour came the moment that clouded the first half, as Mings took a late challenge from Kudus and went down clutching his left knee.

After a four-minute delay, Mings tried to carry on but after Watkins had headed Youri Tielemans’ free-kick just wide, the centre-back had to call it a day when he could not jump for a header with Paqueta.

Mings was visibly emotional and kept covering his face with his shirt. Emery looked agitated and Monchi gazed skywards. Perhaps more than one centre-back will now be needed in the closing days of the transfer window. For now, left-back Digne was asked to slot in alongside Ezri Konsa in the centre.

Digne was in the spotlight in first half stoppage time as the sides prepared for a West Ham free-kick. The Frenchman edged his elbow towards Paqueta, who collapsed as though he had taken a blow to the guts from Tyson Fury. Paqueta’s attempts to have Digne sent off were dismissed by referee Peter Bankes and VAR – so why did the Brazilian also escape punishment for such blatant faking? After the kick was finally taken, Tielemans blocked Kudus’ shot close to the line. Paqueta was booed off at the interval.

Paqueta could have silenced the home fans early in the second half when he turned Konsa neatly only to miss the target after finding his feet in a tangle. Villa had another escape moments later as Tomas Soucek somehow failed to force the ball over the line from inside the six-yard box.

Konsa came to Villa’s rescue just after the hour mark. Martinez fumbled a deep cross from Kudus and the ball broke to Carlos Soler, with Konsa positioned perfectly on the line to block the goalbound effort.

The Villa bench had seen enough and sent on Donyell Malen and Jhon Duran on for Watkins and Bailey, and Malen had tested Areola within a minute of his arrival. Shortly after the substitution, Mings walked unaided along the touchline and took his place on the bench, after giving a thumbs-up to the fans.

Villa had started to look vulnerable under the high ball and Emerson drifted away from Matty Cash at the far post to head Alvarez’s cross beyond Martinez.

And with Cash exposed again in the same spot, Soucek should at least have headed Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross on target. Villa were under the cosh now although Duran nearly surprised Kilman when he slid on to Maatsen’s through ball and guided his effort narrowly wide.

Wan-Bissaka continued to cause problems down the right and from his latest cross, substitute Danny Ings was just off target with a low effort from 16 yards. The Hammers thought they had won it through Paqueta with the final kick only for the offside flag to deny them too.
