When it comes to debating the greatest Premier League sides of the modern era, few matchups ignite discussion like Arsenal’s Invincibles and Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

Both teams left indelible marks on English football, but for former England and Arsenal left-back Ashley Cole, one clearly stood above the other.

Speaking about his experiences in both teams, Cole reflected on the challenges and excitement of facing Mourinho’s team.

“I loved playing in both teams,” he said, “but what I will say is we (Arsenal) couldn’t beat that Chelsea team. When Jose came in, we just could not beat them.”

The veteran defender’s words highlight the tactical mastery and resilience of Mourinho’s side, which consistently frustrated even the most dominant Premier League opponents.

Mourinho’s first Chelsea team in 2004-05 left a remarkable record: the Blues lost one league match all season, conceded only 15 goals, and amassed an impressive 95 points on their way to the Premier League title.

Such dominance, Cole suggests, left a stronger impression than even Arsenal’s unbeaten 2003–04 season, which remains one of English football’s most celebrated achievements.

Cole’s perspective has sparked discussion among football enthusiasts, with many weighing the technical brilliance and flair of Arsenal’s Invincibles against the pragmatic, results-driven dominance of Mourinho’s Chelsea.
