Rapper Guru NKZ has defended the message behind his new single ‘Ashawo’, saying that despite the controversial title, the track is not meant to glamorise immorality but rather expose and challenge it.

Speaking in an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Guru described the song as “a gospel message in disguise.”

“Ashawo is actually a gospel song in disguise. I crafted it to challenge immorality, not promote it. The song explores themes such as prostitution, infidelity and other social vices which are becoming the norm.”

“For me, the gospel is not only about church themes or worship rhythms. It is any message that guides people toward better choices and a more positive way of living,” he explained.

He explained that the title was a deliberate choice to ensure the message reaches today’s audience.

Beyond the song, Guru, real name Maradona Yeboah Adjei, addressed the deeper issues troubling Ghana’s music industry.

It’s very difficult combining music and education – Guru

He lamented the weak structures, outdated systems, and the absence of proper support mechanisms for artistes.

He called for urgent reforms to help Ghanaian musicians compete globally.

“We need a functional royalty system, better studios, training, marketing support, stronger mentorship, and media platforms that promote talent on merit. The talent in Ghana is undeniable, but without proper structures, we will always struggle internationally.”

Guru acknowledged that progress has been made over the years but insists the country must move faster if it hopes to gain its rightful place on the global music map.

“We are making progress, but not at the pace we need. The talent is undeniable, but we lack the proper structure, investment and consistent international promotion. Once we address these issues, Ghanaian music will finally earn its rightful place on the world stage,” he said.
