A new era for the Ashanti Region’s film industry, popularly known as Kumawood, has begun with the formation of the “Kumawood Ashanti Film Association” (KAFA). The announcement came from Dr Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, who oversaw the establishment of the organisation.

The formation of KAFA follows an official report from a committee established by Dr Amoakohene to assess the state of the Kumawood film industry.

The report highlighted the urgent need for a unified, well-structured, and officially recognized body to represent the industry.

“Following the official report, it became clear that there was an urgent need to organize the industry under a single, well-structured, and recognized body,” Dr Amoakohene stated.

In a peaceful and democratic process, various sector players within Kumawood participated in elections to choose their representatives for a new governing board.

The board will be responsible for commissioning a management team to oversee the day-to-day operations of KAFA’s secretariat.

The process was well participated by key actors, directors, crew members, the media amongst others.

Dr Amoakohene expressed his commitment to supporting KAFA in implementing the other recommendations outlined in the assessment report, emphasizing the full backing of both President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Abla Dzifa Gomashie.

“This marks a major step forward in repositioning Kumawood for growth, unity, and sustainability,” Dr Amoakohene affirmed. “I remain committed to supporting them as we work together to implement the other recommendations in the report with the full backing of H.E. the President and the Hon. Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture.”

He concluded with an optimistic outlook for the future of Kumawood, stating, “Kumawood will rise again”.
