Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he earned GH¢250 as his first salary when he signed his first professional contract with Liberty Professionals.

He noted that in 2004, when the deal was finalised, his signing fee was GH¢500 after moving from a coastal team at the time.

The legendary footballer also shared that he used the funds to repair his first vehicle, which had been gifted to him by his brother.

“I was signed for GH¢500 at Liberty. At that time, it was a lot of money in 2004. Then I was given GH¢250 as salary, so I always told them they owe me. My brother had an old car, but the engine was faulty, so I bought a new one for GH¢100 at Abossey Okai and gave GH¢50 to the mechanic. So the remaining GH¢100 was with me, and I was a rich man, those were the times…” he said in Twi in a video shared on X.

Gyan disclosed that there was a vast contrast in earnings when he moved to Europe, where he was paid €3,700 at Udinese and earned even higher wages while on loan to Modena.

He noted that his contract at Udinese improved significantly after receiving a lucrative offer from a Russian club, which he was asked to decline.

“My first foreign contract earned me €3,700 monthly. That was huge, considering I was earning GH¢250 at Liberty. Then I was loaned to Modena for two years, where I was paid €7,000. After my loan, I returned to Udinese following the 2006 World Cup, and my value had gone up.

“The following year, I received a big offer to move to Russia, but they wanted me to stay another season, so they changed my contract and that’s when I started making real money,” he said in the interview shared on X.
