Arsenal defender Gabriel has signed a new four-year contract, extending his stay at the Emirates until 2029.

Having arrived from Lille in 2020, the centre back has made 210 appearances for the Gunners, and has been an integral piece in their resurgence as regular Premier League title challengers this decade.

Gabriel was sorely missed by Arsenal towards the end of the season after he suffered a hamstring injury that resulted in surgery.

However, the 27-year-old – regarded as one of the best in his position in the league – is expected to be fit in time for the start of next season.

That will come as a huge boost to Mikel Arteta, with the defensive pairing of Gabriel and William Saliba having become the bedrock of his Arsenal side.

The duo’s performances have seen the north London side become one of the toughest to break down in in recent seasons, with Arsenal conceding the fewest goals in the Premier League for a second successive campaign in 2024-25.

Gabriel has also played a major role in Arsenal becoming a persistent threat from set-pieces, as he scored five goals in all competitions last season.

His previous deal was set to expire in the summer of 2027, and reportedly saw him earn around £100,000 per week. However, the full details of his new contract are yet to be disclosed.

After signing his new deal, Gabriel said: ‘I arrived here as a young player and after almost five years I’m so happy and I’ve learned a lot.

‘I’m so proud of myself, it’s an amazing journey, and I’m so happy to continue it. I hope I win some trophies with this club, because I love this club and my family loves the club, too.

‘Arsenal is an amazing club and I’m so proud to sign a new contract. I love this club, I love the supporters, my teammates, I love this stadium. I’m so proud and thank you for all the support. We continue together for the future.’

The Brazilian began his career in his home country at Avai, where he signed his first professional contract at the age of 16.

In January 2017, Gabriel joined Ligue 1 side Lille, for which he made 52 appearances across two-and-a-half seasons, before leaving for north London.

His time at the French club saw him endure two loan spells – at Troyes and Dinamo Zagreb in 2017-18.

Arsenal beat multiple clubs to his signing in the summer of 2020, culminating in a £27million deal after add-ons.

Gabriel was included in the PFA Team of the Year in 2023-24 and is also a regular starter for his national team. He has earned 14 caps for Brazil since making his debut in 2023.

Despite his reputation as one of the Premier League’s top players, Gabriel is yet to win a major trophy with the Gunners.

Having joined after Arteta’s FA Cup success in the Spaniard debut season, the only piece of silverware Gabriel has lifted for Arsenal is the FA Community Shield in 2023.
