In the early hours of Tuesday, April 22, a band of armed robbers attacked motorists heading from Donkorkrom to Adawso in the Kwahu Afram Plains.
The incident occurred about 4:00 a.m. when a group of eight heavily armed bandits halted seven vehicles on their approach to the Afram River crossing. Armed with AK-47 rifles, the thieves grabbed cell phones and cash from drivers, passengers, traders, and tourists returning from Easter celebrations.
An eyewitness, who was one among the victims, recalled the terrifying incident, stating that the gunmen assaulted passengers, particularly those who were unable to offer considerable amounts of money. In one horrific incident, the bandits cut the arm of a motorcycle rider who attempted to flee during the robbery.
This recent heist is part of an alarming trend in the Kwahu Afram Plains, which comprises both the Kwahu Afram Plains North and South Districts. The region has long had a problem with highway robberies, which are frequently blamed on bad road conditions and insufficient protection.
In recent years, there has been a temporary decrease in such crimes as a result of the Ghana Police Service’s intervention, which deployed the Anti-Robbery Unit and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams to the area under the leadership of former Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
However, robberies have increased again in the Afram Plains in recent months. Many tourists and traders have fallen prey to these more brazen thieves.
Aside from the immediate loss of items, residents are concerned about the crimes’ rising impact on the regional economy. The Kwahu Afram Plains is often referred to as the country’s food basket due to its importance in agriculture. The frequent robberies have hampered business activity in the area, with traders becoming increasingly afraid to pass through the neighborhood.
Local citizens are pressing for stronger security measures to combat the increase in highway robberies. As the region continues to face these challenges, there is a rising call for authorities to address the root causes of such crimes, including a lack of road infrastructure and security personnel in important locations.
