Springfield E&P, a wholly Ghanaian company and major player in the oil and gas industry, says work has commenced on the appraisal of its Afina field to test the flow of oil in the reservoir and obtain the well productivity data.

The Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Springfield Group, Mr Kevin Okyere, who stated this at a news conference in Accra yesterday to announce an appraisal of the Afina field, stated that the appraisal of the Afina discovery was in line with the International Court of Arbitration ruling on the unitisation dispute between Springfield and Eni.

The International Court of Arbitration in July 8 this year ruled that Springfield should do further work to complete the unitisation process.

Consequently, Mr Okyere noted that his outfit had secured a rig from the Northern Ocean Limited (NOL) to conduct an appraisal of the Afina field.

“Because we strongly believe in the rule of law, we dutifully submitted an appraisal programme for the Afina discovery which includes the re-entry of the Afina 1-X well and the conduct of a Drill Stem Test amongst other related activities. Following the Petroleum Commission’s approval of the appraisal programme, Springfield entered into a drilling contract with NOL to use the Deep sea Bollsta rig to conduct the Drill Stem Test (DST),” he stated.

Moreover, Mr Okyere indicated that the exercise which was being done in partnership with GNPC and GNPC Explorco, re-affirmed Springfields’ commitment to advancing the country’s oil production by finalising the unitisation of the Afina-Sankofa fields to ultimately bring significant value to the government and all stakeholders involved.

He said the appraisal programme was expected to be completed within one month.

The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Springfield Group debunked media reports suggesting that his outfit had completed an appraisal of the Afina field and that the appraisal report contradicted the original data that was presented to justify the unitisation process.

“This is blatantly false. We just commenced implementation of our appraisal programme and we are yet to acquire the relevant data from our appraisal activities, process the data and submit report on the appraisal to the relevant authority.”

In a background about the Afina field, Mr Okyere mentioned that Springfield Exploration and Production Limited and its partners, GNPC and GNPC Eplorco made a huge discovery in 2019 when they drilled the Afina-1X Well on the West Cape Three Points Block 2 offshore.

Mr Okyere again said soon after the discovery, the issue of unitisation between Springfield and Eni ensued and as a result the appraisal of the Afina discovery was differed pending the determination of the Afina/Sankofa unitisation issue.

The Senior Geophysicist of GNPC, Mr Jerry Selor D. Greenfields, in his remarks oeutlined that the appraisal would help unravel uncertainties around the discovery for economic decisions to be taken.
