Media personality and reggae musician, Abubakar Ahmed popularly known as Blakk Rasta, has applauded the leader of the minority caucus, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, for what he described as choosing the interest of Ghanaians over the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on 3FM, Blakk Rasta said Afenyo-Markin could have accepted the offer to chair the Appointments Committee after being nominated by the Speaker of Parliament.

Blakk Rasta said he was happy Afenyo-Markin instead prioritised the interests of Ghanaians over his political party, by refusing the offer to chair the committee.

“Much as I want to congratulate Afenyo-Markin on these bold steps, I would also like to say something else. It’s not easy for a man so partisan to come out and speak against his own caucus in one way or the other. In politics, there is nothing like regret, apology, or the nation. It is all about the political party.

“Speaker of Parliament says let the minority leader chair the appointment committee because when they are in opposition that is when they like to bite the deepest. It’s time for them to think of the nation rather than a political party,” he said.

He continued, “In our nation, it is no more about the country but that of the political party. His caucus believed that it would not serve the interest of the nation but rather the political party.”

    Background

Afenyo-Markin, on the floor of Parliament on March 4, 2025, disclosed that the Speaker had proposed that the Minority Leader be appointed as the Chairman of the Appointments Committee of Parliament during the time when the New Patriotic Party held the Majority.

According to him, the proposal was strongly rejected by his caucus, who then felt that having the Minority Leader chair the committee would not be in their best interest.

He admitted his mistakes, acknowledging that he and his colleagues at the time when they were in the Majority, made a poor judgment.
