Hooliganism in Ghanaian football continues to persist following an attack on a referee during a Division One League game on Sunday, February 9, 2024, a week after a fan was stabbed to death at a match venue.
According to ace sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah, referee Emmanuel Odoom, who officiated Mighty Royals’ game against Bofoakwa Tano, was assaulted.
Dan Kwaku Yeboah recounted that referee Odoom was brutally manhandled, resulting in a deep cut on his head.
“Just yesterday, while we were holding a vigil for Pooley, a referee was beaten during a Division One League game between Wamanafo and Bofoakwa. The referee suffered a head injury, and blood was oozing out,” he said.
This assault adds to a recent act of hooliganism in the Ghana Premier League. Just a week ago, popular Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley was murdered during a game between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko.
Dan Kwaku Yeboah questioned the whereabouts of Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, who is currently on a campaign tour ahead of the CAF elections.
“So does this mean the GFA do not care about our football? Since Pooley’s death, have you heard from Kurt Okraku? He is busy campaigning for a position at CAF Exco,” he remarked.
Nana Pooley was reportedly stabbed five times and succumbed to his injuries during a league game between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
