Trabzonspor goalkeeper, André Onana has received a late call-up to join the Cameroon squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

During the submission of the official 28-man squad for the AFCON, the Manchester United goalkeeper was included despite being snubbed in the initial provisional list.

The controversy arose when Belgian coach Marc Brys omitted the player from the provisional squad, sparking conversations about the goalkeeper’s form in the Turkish Super Lig.

However, after Samuel Eto’o was re-elected for a second term as FECAFOOT president, one of his first acts in restoring the national team’s glory was to dismiss Brys.

The team’s poor performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where they lost in the play-offs and failed to qualify was one of the major reasons behind the decision.

FECAFOOT, led by Eto’o, officially sacked Brys, citing “subterfuge, professional failure,” and accusations of “inciting” players to defy the football federation.

The appointment of Brys’ assistant coach, David Pagou, as interim head coach changed Onana’s fortunes, as he was convinced to add the former Inter Milan goalkeeper for his experience and leadership.

The decision is said to have triggered major instability within the team ahead of the tournament, which is slated for December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, in Morocco.
