Amorim (L) is said to be furious over Onana’s demands

Andre Onana’s turbulent spell at Manchester United has taken yet another twist, with reports claiming the goalkeeper infuriated manager Ruben Amorim by walking into pre-season camp demanding a new deal.

The Cameroonian shot-stopper, already under scrutiny after two error-prone seasons at Old Trafford, returned from his summer break asking for improved terms despite a dramatic drop in form.

His push came in the wake of United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, a setback that triggered the club’s automatic 25% wage cut across the squad. Onana, stung by the salary reduction, insisted on fresh negotiations.

According to The Athletic, the request “did not go down well” with Amorim, who was already weighing up long-term options between the posts.

To make matters worse, Onana soon suffered a hamstring injury during pre-season preparations, which some insiders attributed to him returning in less than peak physical condition.

That left Amorim without his No.1 for much of the summer schedule.

United quietly tested the market but struggled to shift the 29-year-old. Monaco made an enquiry, but their interest cooled quickly after hearing United’s £30 million valuation.

By the time the 2025/26 season began, Onana had slipped down the pecking order, with Altay Bayindir preferred in the opening fixtures and Belgian prospect Senne Lammens arriving late in the window.

Onana’s latest performance, a dismal outing against Grimsby in the Carabao Cup, has only deepened doubts about his future.
